Meet the Artist
Hi! I'm Andrew Vandekop, the Backyard Silversmith! All of the jewelry you see here on our page is made by me and I use .999 pure fine silver. I'm a first generation American (my dad is from Holland and my mom is from England), and I design and create rustic, hand-forged jewelry out of pure .999 Fine Silver in my backyard workshop. I learned the art of silversmithing from my grandfather who was a silversmith in England. I spent two summers there when I was a teenager, watching him use hammers and fire to create beautiful silver goblets, sculptures and jewelry which serves as inspiration for my designs today.
Together with my wife Teisha and our kids Ross and Tori, we launched Backyard Silversmiths in 2016 in our 10' x 20' backyard in Dallas. We first offered our unique, handcrafted artisan silver jewelry on the website Etsy and at high school holiday bazaars. We then transitioned to sharing our jewelry at art fairs and festivals. Ross and Tori were involved from the start helping me work through designs and approach. Today, they're the models you see on our website :).
After Tori graduated high school and went off to college, we decided to open a place where people could visit and see how the jewelry is made. We opened the Backyard Silversmiths Jewelry Shop and Workshop on I-35 in Abbott, Texas and would love for you to stop by and visit! We have an observation area where you can watch all aspects of silversmithing! (NOTE: In light of current events, our shop is closed but you can still support us online and visit virtually through our Facebook Lives!)
Prior to launching Backyard Silversmiths, I worked for more than 25 years in corporate. I graduated with degrees in robotics engineering and finance and own 3 patents utilizing my robotics design expertise. But it's silversmithing that I enjoy the most and I now own a design patent on our most popular piece, The Spur Bracelet®. Thank you for visiting our page. I'm so happy to be sharing my designs with all of you :).
