A recent painting class done at the Meadowbrook Apartments in Huntingdon Valley, PA. A great time, and such a good group!!
Another painting class is in the books! Thanks to all of you for your interest! ... great job!
Another painting class is in the books! Thanks to the folks at Meadowbrook Apartments in Huntingdon Valley, PA for their interest and energies! I often bring more than one idea for the night's painting, and also always encourage them to take off in their own directions if they want to. A few took me up on that here, but it was a great time! Thanks to Lindy Properties for making these classes happen!
Need an apartment? THAT'S the place to go!!
Recent painting class at the Meadowbrook apartment community. All did a great job!
A recent ad done for Lindy Properties' two Bucks County apartment communities. ... Great paces to live if Warrington, PA could work for you!
Newsletters are always fun! This was the January newsletter I designed for two Bucks County Lindy Property apartments, Warrington Crossings and the Park at Westminster. If you need to be close to the Warrington, Warminster, Doylestown, Willow Grove, Jamison, Hatboro, Horsham or even Doylestown areas, this could be a great location for you. They enjoy a great reputation in the industry and do a lot for their residents! Cookouts, brunches, bus trips, etc. This issue featured a pre-Golden Globes party with food and even a Red Carpet for all the guests to walk as they arrived!
A recent painting class at the Meadowbrook apartments in Huntingdon Valley ... a great apartment community with a number of talented students. I enjoyed how so many of these folks took the basic idea and went in their own directions with it! If you know of another place or group that might enjoy having ongoing classes in painting or drawing, please let me know! I'm open to other venues. Classes can be a one-time, weekly, monthly, or a series, like maybe 4 to 6 weeks in a row, etc. If there's an interest, let's talk!
Ever thought of taking up painting? I teach drawing and painting classes at the Warrington Michaels. There are different levels of classes that you can pay for, but also 1 free dawing and 1 free painting class each month to give folks a risk- and cost-free opportunity to roll up their sleeves and give it a try! This was an excellent class this week! Great job, all!
Check www.michaels.com, or go right to this link for the Warrington store classes:
The photo's not that great here as to true color and clarity, but I keep looking for simple painting layouts that a newcomer can do in a reasonable time, learn with and feel good about. This painting I call, "Sunset Pines" is really pretty simple, and hopefully my next class can get through it in our allotted time!
Have 3 places now offering occasional classes. Would love more. Let me know if you know of a venue that might like to have painting or drawing classes!
Some projects are just too much fun!! I couldn't share this, of course, until my daughter-in-law (the Mommy) had done so first. Little Taylor here will soon have a brother or sister. (Grandchild #9!)
It's a tall order running a small Christian School in inner-city Philadelphia ... budgets are tight ... times are hard ... the streets and area can be tough. I was happy to be involved in the redesign/updating of a brochure for Olney Christian School. They're making a difference in the lives of their students and meeting a real need!
The brochure's inside.
Third night tonight in our 5-week class, Drawing - Level 2. There's room if you want to join us! Not the end of the world that you'll have missed the 1st two nights. Come out and draw with us!! The class is free at the Abington Library from 7 to 8:30! Bring sharpened pencils and some grey paper. (Frustrated artist "want-to-be's" especially welcome!)
Wrapped up another 5-week drawing class tonight at the Abington Library. Thanks to the library for making these classes possible, and thanks also to those who signed up, without whose interest the classes would obviously not last very long!!
We worked on perspective, observing light and shadow, shading methods, composition, and for this last class, we drew on grey paper, adding both the lights and the darks! ... It's a great exercise that helps us learn to really LOOK AT, and OBSERVE what is happening as the light defines the shape of an object!
I did the sketch shown here tonight in class.
I will do these classes again in the Fall (Sept./Oct), but will now turn my attention to the painting classes scheduled at the Michaels in Warrington, PA. ... I WOULD like to do more in the way of teaching! If you know of a venue where they'd like to offer classes, let's talk!
And one more to complete the Primaries!
Continuing the theme ...
Just did some sheets I've been thinking about for a while. ... In my drawing and painting classes, I had talked some about how our eyes blend colors together. So here's a little fun with color theory. This is exactly how color printing works ... the images we see in magazines and other printed materials are broken down into very small dots in 4 basic colors ... cyan (a light blue), magenta (a hot pink), yellow and black ... and it's the various combinations of these colors that give us a representation of real life's colors. (Boring and tedious to some, FASCINATING to me!) You'll hear this called full-color printing, or more correctly "4-color printing." You may also hear it called CMYK, for the colors I mentioned.
That's all true for printed materials, which are using reflected light. But now, since you're seeing this over the internet, via a computer screen, we're in the world of projected light! In projected light, the rules change, and we're using RGB instead of CMYK. Red, Green and Blue make up the primary colors in projected light and when you put them all together, you get a white beam of light.
SO back to these little posters I made ... they are simply made from small squares of two primary colors. If you have one of these on your screen, look very closely and you'll see they are just the two colors mentioned at the top of each poster. But step back as far from the computer as you can and your eye will blend the squares together into the color in-between the two on the color wheel. Example: the two primaries of Red and Blue create the secondary color Purple. Of course the exact purple you get would be influenced by the exact red and blue that was used.
Just did a promotional flyer for Olney Christian School in Philadelphia. They are making a real difference in the lives of many young people in the area around Olney and Roosevelt Boulevard. If you know folks in the area that could benefit, encourage them to attend the Open House on Tuesday evening, March 17! (See details on the flyer.)
It's been too long since I shared anything here, so this is a flyer done to promote the Meadowbrook Golf Club in Huntingdon Valley, PA. It's too late to still get this offer (it was designed to get memberships in before the end of 2014), but if you want to consider an attractive and fun par 3 & 4 course, keep this in mind for next Spring!
I recently finished a site diagram for another Lindy apartment community that I'm working with. The Park at Westminster is a lovely community in Bucks County with about 270 apartments. It will probably be hard to see the detail here, but the schematic shows the main buildings, the parking areas, playground, pool, fitness center, leasing office, and other key information for residents and prospects.
... A fun project!
Demo day recently at the Michaels Arts and Crafts store in WIllow Grove. More classes coming up soon! This was for acrylic seascape painting. Let me know if you're interested. The classes are held right in the store in a relaxed, private classroom setting ... and no prior painting experience is required!
Just finished 5 weeks of teaching a drawing class at Abington Library! (Apple picture is from a study sketch started in class.) Thanks to those 20 or so who attended. I had a great time, and hope all of you did, as well ... and hope you feel it was well-worth your time! Hopefully, we can schedule more soon. Keep drawing!
Yes, I work in advertising, so I KNOW this is true ... but more people need to be aware of what level of "fakery" is going on in ad photos! No sandwich will ever look as good as the poster photos of it ... No hotel will look as glorious as it does in its brochure ... And most models DO NOT look the way you see them in magazines! (Rest easy, Ladies, ... real women don't look like that!) ... I have done retouching. You'd be amazed at what can be done. Here's an interesting article.
There are hundreds of books that expose the truths about every industry. While there have been movies highlighting the wrongdoings of …
Do you have old photos that are crinkled, torn, cracked, faded ... that you might want restored, retouched or enhanced? Just did this one of my Dad for Father's Day and thought that maybe others might want some done, too. Private message me with any inquiries.
Haven't "broadcasted" this yet (been very busy getting my head around LOTS of new information!), but I'm delighted to be working with Lindy Communities, a 75-year provider of quality apartment homes! I'm working with coordinating marketing efforts and some resident services for 6 of their communities around Jenkintown, Abington, Elkins Park and Huntingdon Valley specifically. Lindy owns about 30 apartment communities all around the Philadelphia area and its suburbs!
So if you need an apartment, check our website! (Or you can contact me, too! ... I'll get you connected!) http://www.comehometolindy.com

What is design? And where is the value that a designer brings? (This cover is a few years old, but I had saved the text version, thinking I'd use it for an example some day!)
Designers take information and present it (hopefully) in a way that catches the eye and draws the reader in. Good design HELPS the message communicate through layout, (meaning the size, placement on the page, eye-flow, colors, etc.), imagery, typeface selection ... all of these can be used to highlight the most important information and lessen the impact of (and yes, sometimes even HIDE) lesser information. Which of these two representations of the same information reaches out to you more effectively?
Cute Ad! Is your advertising/marketing working?
Adobe Marketing Cloud created this commercial to help its users understand why going beyond sales is important to growing a business. While slightly dramatized, the ad does make a point about why analyzing data is better than taking traffic at face value.
My 2-hour acrylic painting introductory class is coming up soon at Michaels in Willow Grove! (a week from Friday!) Message me or stop by the store for full details. Tell a friend ... bring a friend. Get started on what can be a LIFETIME of enjoyment!!
Teaser: Another teaching opportunity is solidifying ... a drawing class coming in the Fall at the Abington, PA Library! This will probably be an hour to an hour & 1/2, and run for about 5 weeks starting in September. Exact details to come.
Again, from the "Old Artwork" file ... this little guy (our first son, Will) is now a Major in the US Air Force! ... Sketched around '82 to '84.
Old line art portrait.
Came across some older drawings that I haven't thought about for awhile! This was from when the Mac was pretty new. I worked for a small ad agency that did mostly automotive ads, so I combined the old clunky Macintosh mouse of that day with a car.
It's official! I will be teaching some future classes at the Michael's Arts/Crafts store just outside of Willow Grove Park Mall ... starting with a painting class in April! If you'd like more information, just say below or private message me.
