Project for Public Spaces

Architects often rely on extreme renderings of "green" features to make proposed buildings look sustainable. These verdant fantasies almost never quite look as vibrant in real life, do they? We're looking forward to chuckling at the crazy stuff that will undoubtedly be turned out for Reality Cues' Eco-Porn Competition, which asks: "What is it about ['eco' visual] tropes that allow us to trick others and ourselves into believing that what looks sustainable is sustainable?"

That's a great, and important, question to ask at a time when so many buildings are being designed to look "sustainable," rather than to actually sustain communities.

The ramifications for urban design would be incredible

The hyperloop would be solar powered and connect cities up to 900 miles away from each other. The passenger pods would be enclosed, which diminishes concerns about weather and interacting with wildlife. The designer of the hyperloop is Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX and Tesla Motors.

There are still issues to work out before the plan would be practical, but it is an exciting look forward to alternative modes of transportation.

"It’s almost like libraries are going back to how they began: as gathering spaces for people to talk about ideas, and shaping new concepts. It is a paradigm shift from how things have been recently, but it’s almost really like going back to basics."

The Rehabilitation Tax Credit program - the federal government's most effective historic preservation tool - is threatened by a "start from scratch" federal tax reform effort. Please take a moment to write Senator Schumer and Senator Gillibrand - or your own Senators if from another state - and ask them to assure that this federal incentive for historic building rehabilitation remain in the federal tax code.
