Apple is a well-known company with a little known best practice. In an Apple retail store, every single employee gets a standing ovation on their first day and their last day of work. Most customer service oriented companies believe the focus should always be on the customer, and yet, Apple believes that engaging the workforce is more important. They encourage their employees to stop in the middle of a shift to pay tribute to employees who’ve provided service. It’s completely countercultural. The lesson here is to focus on your people and how you can make the workplace a cooler environment to work in, and people will instinctively want to work harder, perform better, and stay longer.

Working with a Legendary Brand... Bennigan's! I'm as engaged as I was managing at their Orlando restaurant many years ago. Kevin Reilly defined what was to be a great General Manager. He is one of a few special people that made a huge difference in my life.

Photographs don't lie, as the saying goes, but they do offer only select testimony. I testify that this Bennigan's food exceeds expectations. Paul and the gang are doing an amazing job capturing and delivering that legendary experience.

Why did hospitality turnover rise to 72.1% in 2015?

“….Official numbers are beginning to emerge that confirm what restaurant operators already knew: Turnover rates have been pushing higher.” – Nation’s Restaurant News

“….Bruce Grindy, chief economist for the National Restaurant Association, said rising quit rates indicate workers are increasingly confident in the labor market and are willing to move to another job.”

Restaurant employees are still trained to serve and upsell, not to engage in conversations that connect whereas creating relationships.

I have read and heard over and over that millennials have no concept of what we know as great work ethic. That the work ethic and values that we grew up with are so far removed from their possibility of consciousness that if you try to address it you will probably only drive yourself crazy.

I do believe that parents don't have the time or sometimes don't care and it falls on the schools and the workplace to teach respect. What manager has the time to stand by every employee that is talking to customers? Few, if any. They are too busy working all the positions!

I digress. Back to the millennials. Perhaps a little less condescending attitude would go a long way in managing a different generation. Recognition, consistent feedback, flexibility and clearly working together for a common goal is how you get millennials on your side, not trying to "game" them. This type of motivation may not be all that different from other generations.

Collaboration and inclusion goes further than trying to figure out how to outsmart millennials.

Employees want to feel they are an important part of engaging in something bigger than themselves. As a result new staff training and verbiage needs to reflect that or risk losing employee and customer brand ambassadors.

Motivating employees to stay is a much more cost effective way to run your business especially a customer driven food business and it requires only learning a few new words and teaching your staff to use one or two new phrases and having a discussion about how your employees should and could be bringing in new customers every day and consequently give themselves more control and more money as a result. That would rock!

Chris Martin’s on-site employee seminars are ideal for any size staff and is 100% more cost effective than even one “bad hire.”

Bennigan's is and always will be a legendary brand. Enjoyed collaborating with them. October will mark my 30th year love affair with the brand. Started as a server October 16, 1986 and continue to partner with marketing. Even met Trina Martin, my wife, at the corporate office in 1991.
