IMLAY Prepress Tip: Set it Off!

When you create a PDF for print from a layout program like InDesign, you should create it with Crop Marks, whether it bleeds or not (but it's a MUST if it does bleed). These marks help us keep the positioning you intended! However, the best practice is to go one step further and Offset the Crop Marks by 1/8" (.125"). Doing so will back the Crop Marks out of the bleed area, so you can be certain no marks will be present on the final product.

If you have any questions about how to use or offset Crop Marks in whatever program you're using, just give us a call. Imlay is happy to help : )

You’ve seen it over and over. Pay your bills via the Internet. Help save a tree by receiving your statements online. What if we really did become a paperless society? IMLAY Proofing Tip- Archeology 101

Sometimes you'll see thin white lines on your PDF proof that won't actually print. These are called artifacts. There's an easy way to determine whether these will print or not! All you have to do is check it out at several different magnification (zoom) levels. If it disappears, reappears, moves around, or does a little jig, it won't print.

Even easier- print it out and take a look! And Happy Friday!

IMLAY Proofing Tip- Breakin' (Out) the Rules!

Adobe Acrobat's measuring tool can be frustrating with it's selections when you want to measure elements on your PDF. It's much better at measuring between guides! All you have to do is turn on your Rulers (View->Show/Hide->Rulers & Grids->Rulers…or Cmnd+R Mac/Cntrl+R PC) and then pull your guides from the ruler area to where you want to measure. If you are still having trouble getting the Measuring Tool to select the guide, zooming in should solve the problem.

IMLAY Design Tip- How to Get the Blues!

No matter what it looks like on the screen- if you're printing CMYK and there is less than a 30% difference between your Cyan and Magenta values- it's going to come out as Purple on press. So if you're at 90 for Cyan, you don't want to exceed 60 for Magenta.

IMLAY Design Tip: Use the Right Tool

Prepare your art in the program that is best suited for the task. Illustrator® is a drawing (vector) program, ideal for logos, packaging, posters and single-page layouts.

Photoshop® is a pixel-based (raster) program that lets you size, color-correct and manipulate scanned images such as photographs and flat art.

Neither is intended for multi-page documents (Illustrator can accommodate multiple pages, but it's easier to generate PDFs and faster to preflight for errors in InDesign or Quark).

For multi-page documents, use a page layout program such as QuarkXPress® or InDesign®.

Did you know? If you spend more than 40 minutes reading something online, you would create a smaller carbon footprint if you printed the material out, since both your computer and the server providing the information are using energy.

Need to get a message to your members, donors, or customers FAST and CHEAP? Cards that are between 3.5x5" and 4.25x6" can qualify for the First Class Postcard rate. That's cheaper than a Standard Letter and WAY cheaper than a First Class Letter!

Even better- print with Imlay and be certain you'll capture that sweet rate.

Powering a computer takes a lot of energy. On average it takes 500 kilowatt-hours of electricity to power one computer continuously for five months. It takes the same amount of electricity to produce 440 lbs. of paper, the typical amount of paper each of us consumes annually.

IMLAY Design Tip: Make Image Changes Before You Import!

Scale, rotate, and otherwise manipulate images in the original graphic application (Photoshop or Illustrator) before you import them into your page-layout program (QuarkXPress or InDesign). When you manipulate images in
your page-layout program, you make the layout much more complex, and that can result in output problems.
