We see this as a two-way street. Yes, you have to depend on the outside source, but you have to commit to the project.

Also, we feel strongly about training the trainer and preparing customized material - designed around your workflows, not the generic manuals provided by the vendor. Again, a two-way street - their expertise and your context.

Cloud PIM Dilemmas:
With all the “clouders” (like Salsify and SKUforce) coming out, there are still some obstacles being exposed for the cloud PIM providers. It’s funny to talk with those who have never generated a high-resolution postscript page (prior to PDF distilling) and what it takes from a data standpoint. I’ve seen single pages generate more than a gigabyte of data. Those are a lot of packets to send back and forth over the internet.

PIM in the Middle:

Having a PIM gives you two great advantages:

Since WebCMS/eCommerce systems are getting changed every 2-4 years, that means getting your product data into a new format will need to be done as well - unless you have a PIM. Then, it's just a matter getting your connections straight - a simple integration.

Additionally, the system that doesn't change much is the legacy/ERP. That means, in kind of a paradoxical way, that the PIM will extend the life of the ERP. Get a best-in-class product information management solution and manage that data outside the ERP.

Hence, a PIM help you change for the web when you want to, and helps you not to change on the legacy, when you don't want to.
