TRUE STORY...

BareMade has been in business 4 years, and I’ve changed changed its logo a total of 3 times. 🙈

It wasn’t until early last year that I finally landed on a logo that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE and still do.

And want to know how? I put myself through my own discovery session to figure out some brand strategy. (I meaaan...why didn’t I do this before..?! 🤦🏻‍♀️)

This allowed me to understand what fonts to use, colors, and overall feel o wanted from my logo.

A thorough Discovery Session allows you to do the work ONCE. It also helps us understand your business and allows us to make creative decisions right the first time.

The more clarity we have, the better the result will be. 💯

As we take a deep dive into some 2019 goodness, we’re looking back on 2018 which I’m lovingly dubbing the “WTF just happened?!” Year in my business.

✨I took on amazing clients and not-so-amazing clients.
✨ I built a team….and then shrunk it.
✨ I doubled my revenue.
✨ I made good decisions and then deadly ones.
✨ I learned from the best about growing this business.
✨ I changed and changed and changed my mind again.

And from all this…we grew… I grew.

Looking at the work we created this year, I’m proud of the ability to create work for vastly different businesses in the online space and styles. Regardless of the fact that behind the scenes, 2018 left me like 🥴🥵 @ Brooklyn, New York

THERE’S NO EXCUSE FOR A SH*TTY WEBSITE. 💩

Stop saying your branding and visuals are not priority.

Or that you’ll “get to it” when you have the money or make a sale. Sure, marking that sale is possible without it....but much harder.

When you you have a consistent and clear brand, sh*t just gets easier. Content is easier to create, clients and customers are easier to come by.

⁉️Why?

Because you’re telling them about you without you actually talking at their face. Your site is on point and optimized, your visuals intentionally attract them. Makes your job easier to close that sale.

Can’t invest the money on branding? INVEST THE TIME. Find the freebies, take the branding course, tinker with the tech.

LEAVING MY CUSHY 9-5 JOB WAS THE BEST DECISION I EVER MADE.

Burnt out, depressed and pregnant.

This was my reality towards the end of 2014.

At that time, I was at my 9-5 (more like 9-9) agency job where I was earning more than enough to live comfortably in a Manhattan studio apartment with my now husband. There I was....art directing and designing for giant companies like Conde Nast and Chase.

Funny enough, I was feeling pretty sh*tty about it.

You see, I dreamt of a life where I can choose my own own clients and work hours. I wanted the freedom to turn down work and not butt heads with a boss at every step.

But when the money's good, we'll put up with anything, right?

My shining light was that I had a couple freelance clients on the side. I dedicated every bit of extra time I had to them, hoping one day I had enough money saved up to do my own thing. But I knew I didn't have the lady balls to quit.

Until this happened:

In September 2014, I found out I was pregnant.

Usually, this is the type of news that makes you feel like being less risky and create a more stable financial situation (college savings, anyone?). Funny enough, I felt the opposite.

More than ever, I had to get the f**k out of there. I was unfulfilled, stressed and depressed. And my "luxury hustle time" now had an expiration date (kids are a time suck).

So at 4 months pregnant, I quit.

3.5 years later, I don't regret it one bit. I have a spunky almost-3-year-old that fills my life with happiness I never knew I could feel. I have a successful small design business that I've put in all my extra time and effort into.

To quote my homie Charles Dickens, "Change begets change."

It took an unexpected milestone to catapult me into action. I forced myself to make that big ass move and it was the catalyst to many changes that followed.

When we force ourselves out of our unwanted routines and do something that scares us is when we really put things in motion.

That is when we truly start seeing the difference. Small changes do help, but it can make for a painfully slow climb to the top.

So tell me, where in your business are you feeling a change needs to be made?

Maybe you want to quit that 9-5 too or you want to pivot your business in a different direction?

Maybe it's just as simple as changing your branding?

What is that big move you can make now but are too scared to make?

Let me know!

I DID THINGS THAT SCARED ME LAST YEAR.

I dyed my hair blonde and got a nose piercing among other things. Coincidently I turned 30 last summer, so naturally, friends were wondering if I was going through some kind of quarter life crisis. (Ha!)

Thinking back, I consider it more of a subconscious act of rebellion.

I was rebelling against my own crazy need of caring of what others think of me.

As a teenager, I was always changing my hair, had my eyebrows pierced and was interested in things that only a small circle of friends understood. I would spend nights tinkering with photoshop til 3 am, creating templates for Live Journal (remember that?) and making pretty desktop backgrounds. I LOVED creating and making things pretty.

But as I got older, adulting slapped the creativity out of me.

On I went graduating from college, working my 9-5's. I became a robot. This is what I was supposed to do. No other way. I had no hobbies, I had no aspirations. Just get a job, make money, get married, have the babies, and get that 401k. Even after quitting my job and going off on my own, I was still stuck in this box with invisible boundaries I set for myself. I lost all passion for design and even thought I no longer wanted to do this anymore.

Then last year, in the midst of a serious emotional slump, I decided that I wanted to be 17 again....or at least channel that sense of creativity I had as a teen.

It's crazy how just changing your hair can make you feel. I started to enjoy putting makeup on gain, I got a nose piercing, and I felt (for lack of a better word), "Cool".

Simple and silly, but it really worked. I felt mentally better, I took more risks, and I started enjoying my work again.

So as 2018 got closer, like everyone else I thought about what I can improve in 2018. What do I need to make my 2018 resolutions? What were my goals?

Then it struck me: why do we have to assume that we always have to improve everything?

What if one of my 2018 resolution was just to keep going? Keep doing the good sh*t I started last year, and bring it with me into the new year?

Think about this:

What did you get right last year?

What made you feel amazing in your life or business?

What made you smile?

And finally, how can you bring that joy, sense of accomplishment, and gratification into this new year?

I obviously have other goals because let's be honest, there's always room for improvement. But this definitely took the pressure off getting more done this year.

So what did you do in 2017 that you wouldn't change or improve? What did you do that you can just keep doing?

DON'T LET YOUR SH*TTY 2017 BRAND HIT YOU ON THE WAY OUT.

Are you ready for the new year? I sure as hell am.

As much as this year rocked my boat, there's nothing like the idea of new beginnings to get you into business planning mode.

And that's what we've been up to here these last couple weeks in the studio.

We've got some fun product launches planned while niching down our ideal client even more to provide a super custom, super valuable new service offer. More on that next year. 😉

As 2017 comes to a close, I want to leave you with three quickie nuggets o' wisdom to get your branding sh*t together in 2018.

Because let's face it, you've probably been DIYing this thing and flying by the seat of your pants (and by that I mean inconsistent self-made designs that don't make your product look worth their true value).

Nugget o' wisdom #1: Amplify your "you-ness" in every piece of design

When creating brand visuals, ask yourself, "Does this resonate with me first?".

So many times I've had potential clients using design they THINK they SHOULD be using...

Got a law firm? Cool, make everything blue, use fancy font, and talk like a robot. Sell a feminine product? Great. Make everything pink, bust out that script-y looking font, and throw in some flower drawings.

You know what I mean.

So, before you start assuming what your followers want to see, I urge you to first dig deep and get REAL specific with who your ideal tribe is.

Nugget o' wisdom #2: Simplify your "toolbox"

Design might seem like a nightmare to learn (trust me, those 4 years of art school were no joke).

So before you jump into every design tool known to man kind and totally overwhelm yourself, take stock in what it is you need.

Start by making a short list of all the necessary design-y things you'll be needing and using conistently.

Here's an example: Logo, Social Media graphics, PDFs, Website with a blog, stock images, and webinar graphics.

Once you've populated a list, find programs or resources that fit the bill.

A good rule of thumb is to use the least amount of programs that can cover more than one thing on the list. For example, Canva can cover your logo, social media AND webinar graphics, AND PDFs. Unsplash covers your stock images, and Squarespace covers your website and blog.

Nugget o' wisdom #2: Create a simple brand style guide

The best way to to keep yourself streamlined and consistent is to create some basic guidelines for yourself.

When you've had all your design ducks in a row, use Canva to put together this simple document that'll include your logo, color palette, fonts, images and other assets that will keep you consistent.

Remember, Consistency breeds recognition.

It takes a while for a person's brain to associate certain visuals to a brand. So if you don't stick to your guns and stay consistant, you'll never make the impact you're capable of.

There you have it! My final quickie lessons for 2017. Take these simple steps and you'll see big shifts.

Hope you enjoy your last day of 2017, friend. Happy New Year!

Now where's my champagne!?
