I’ve always had many creative outlets. When I was young, I loved to bring my imagination into reality whether on the page, in music, or even with some legos. Music is my main form of expression, but art and design has been gradually resurfacing over the years.
Music is actually what I would tie to bringing back my artistic aspirations. When I started a solo music project in 2011 that would become my current three-piece, hard rock band, Devil’s Heat, I needed to have the artwork to go along with the music. An album always needs a cool cover, so I naturally did my own art for my own music.
Once Devil’s Heat crossed over from solo project to full-fledged band, not only did we still need album art and merch, now we needed gig posters too! I’m pretty proud of the posters I’ve designed for our shows and always put forth as much effort into poster design as I do our music--no matter how big or small an event.
Being a fan of tees as a form of expression, I’ve seen lots of cool stuff, but had ideas of my own as well. Eventually, I figured I may as well add that to the list of my hobbies! I’ve always loved animation and cartoons and continue to watch and check out the new stuff that comes out every day. My first design I thought to tackle was an idea I had to combine one of my favorite, modern cartoons (Steven Universe) with my love of classic gaming (Super Mario World).
The design came out exactly as it was in my mind, yet simultaneously better than I could have hoped. I submitted it to Tee Fury, an online pop culture tee shop featuring designs from indie artists--rejected. Not becoming discouraged, I updated the design and submitted to another indie art tee shop on my list, Ript Apparel (also suggested by a friend)--ACCEPTED!
January 13th, 2019, is the date of my first publishing by an indie art shop with daily exclusives. This is the date I chose as the launch date of MJCP Tees. I continue to design and submit to indie-driven, daily exclusive tee sites along with selling my designs on a Tee Public shop. There, my designs can be printed on media other than tees such as: mugs, stickers, posters, and more.
I hope you like my stuff! --MJCP
