You may be skeptical when someone you don’t know sends you a text message you didn’t expect and it tells you to click on a link. Maybe that little voice in your head starts talking to you. I know mine does. It says, “Hmm, this could be a scam. Maybe someone wants to steal my personal information. Or get me to pay for something.”

I guess that's why scammers come up with new stories all the time, like a package tracking scam we're hearing about.

Here's how it works: https://go.usa.gov/xdPK8

Phone pre-installed with ‘Chinese malware’ offered for free by US government.

Assurance Wireless is a federal Lifeline Assistance program brought to you by Virgin Mobile. Lifeline is a government benefit program supported by the federal Universal Service Fund.

This program offers the UMX U686CL phone as their most budget-conscious phone option. This includes a package that comes with free data, texts and minutes.

It's reported the device is pre-installed with ‘Chinese malware’ offered for free pending eligibility by US government. Cybersecurity company MalwareBytes published a blog post claiming that what is installed on a phone provided through US government supported funding is “appalling”. See comments.

In response to the allegations, US senator Ron Wyden has called for a Federal Communications Commission investigation.

Opinion | Twelve Million Phones, One Dataset, Zero Privacy

EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY DAY, everywhere on the planet, dozens of companies — largely unregulated, little scrutinized — are logging the movements of tens of millions of people with mobile phones and storing the information in gigantic data files. The Times Privacy Project obtained one such file, by far the largest and most sensitive ever to be reviewed by journalists. It holds more than 50 billion location pings from the phones of more than 12 million Americans as they moved through several major cities, including Washington, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Anonymous sources provided the Times with a file containing a dataset from a single location data company that contained the 50 billion pings over several months in 2016 and 2017. With the data, Times reporters Stuart A. Thompson and Charlie Warzel were able to track numerous people in positions of power, including military officials, law-enforcement officers, and high-powered lawyers.

When ordering online, use the company name as part of your name. For example, I would order something at Overstock.com, so I'd make my mailing address name John Overstock Doe. If I receive an email with that name, I know who sold my information and can advise others.

Malware Attack Delays Alabama District's School Year Twice

LutchenPC has first hand knowledge how our public school IT infrastructure is synonymous with doing the most with the least. The money is enough for any legitimate network security or ethical white hat hacker to use what's available in open source to fortify a public education network.

There's a reason it's mainly Hospitals, Schools, Politicians and other public entities being trolled, the high profile and bureaucracy makes any attempt a successful one.

Private industry had the unfortunate high profile breaches to learn from and can take unilateral steps of prevention. Public sector has been and will continue to fall behind. Reason this type of thing hasn't happened more is not because IT staff are proactive, but rather the Robin Hood hacker philosophy. Not cool to go after kids and sick people, dude. If they've done no wrong but instead helps children and the sick, the "lulz" (aka amusement derived at the expense of your hack victim) isn't the same as going after big evil corporations for spite.

Often, these indiscriminate hackers are from other countries bent on showing off, no remorse or any other interest other than making a few bucks and drunk on power.

It would be like strealing cookies from the Girl Scouts because they could. These hackers or the types are known to the hacking community as sort of bored anarchists looking for lulz or in regular vernacular "a cheap laugh".

These would be those kids in class taking stuff too far, nevermind the irony but posers who come off as goth as projecting some sociopath alter ego.

The hacking community are as full of diverse cliques and different personalities just as any given High School student body. A fascinating and distinct subculture.

For the second time in a week, Houston County Schools in Alabama had to delay their school year's opening due to a malware attack and the ongoing recovery. It has not been disclosed what type of malware attack they were hit with, but sounds like a ransomware attack based upon the details given.
