To honor and celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we have chosen to share something that laid the foundation for his work that we believe still rings true, especially today: his 6 principles of nonviolence. Let’s all take some time today to reflect on how we can apply these lessons to our everyday lives as we continue pushing each other and our world forward. Happy MLK Day!

Today we want to celebrate the true unsung heroes of quarantine sanity over the last year… our houseplants. Whether they were blossoming, wilting or just kind of sitting there, they brought a much needed touch of the outdoors while we were all locked inside. Happy Houseplant Appreciation Day! Be sure to give your little ones some extra water today… or don’t… whatever they like.

WALO OOO Post

From Dallas to LA and Mexico too, no one took a call, an email or Zoom. Inside of their homes, their laptops were closed, they were ready to relax and have fun... “We’re closed for the season, Christmas is the reason, we’ll see you in 2021!”

We hope everyone has safe and happy holidays!

Whether this year made you say "YIKES," reminded you that "People Are Crazy" or made you want to "Rise Up," we can all agree that a little "Tequila" would be "Wonderful." So, join us in wishing "Good Riddance" to 2020 with the WALO 2020 Soundtrack... and remember "We Gon' Be Alright" because "Things Can Only Get Better!" Enjoy!

Thanksgiving

This has been a year full of curveballs and missteps, but also one full of new experiences and passions. Whether you’ve spent the last 11 months finding your place in the fight for equality and inclusion, perfecting your sourdough recipe, or committing tireless hours to finding out what really happened to Carole Baskin’s late husband, you have made it through and are continuing to do so with Guts, Soul and Play. So this Thanksgiving, we want to take a minute to express our gratitude for all of the silver linings. We hope the rest of your year is full of whatever is important to you.

On November 11, 1919, a year after World War I ended, President Woodrow Wilson delivered a message of continued peace and growth as he designated the first Armistice Day – which would later become Veterans Day – in order to honor the service of all former military members. Today, we want to extend our thanks to each and every former serviceman and woman for their work in preserving our freedoms.

To close out our Hispanic Heritage Month spotlights, we will be taking a glimpse into the story of our Co-Founder & ECD Walter Barraza, a.k.a. Wall-E.

“Born at the dawn of a civil war, my first 4 years in El Salvador are reminiscent of soldiers carrying machine guns. My angel of a mother, Silvia, gave birth to me in a small mountainous village in San Juan de Merino San Vicente where she paid the local “nurse,” a tough-as-nails grandmother-like figure, 5 colones (a whopping fifty cents) for the delivery. At age four, my courageous father, Pablo, decided that our story was meant to take place somewhere else. That somewhere else ended up being Irving, Texas, where I was introduced to the fast pace of American life.

“The 36 years that followed flew by. From adapting to life in the U.S. to meeting friends from all over the world, I became a sponge for everything cultural. This was the foundation that molded me into who I am today. If you’re curious to hear more, reach out and we can chat over a coffee/tea!”

As we continue to bring the backgrounds of our WALO team into the spotlight for Hispanic Heritage Month, we take a look at our Strategy & Integration Director, Victor Acosta’s perspective on heritage and culture.

“My connection and understanding of my Hispanic heritage was not a traditional path. My mother's side of the family descended from African sharecroppers from the deep south and German immigrants from Europe. My father's family moved in the 50's from Puerto Rico to New York City in one of the largest Hispanic migrations in the US -- otherwise known as New Yoricans. As a commonwealth of the US, Puerto Ricans have long been US citizens, but we have not always been welcomed or accepted as true Americans. I didn’t grow up around my father’s side of the family. In fact, my first trip to Puerto Rico wasn’t until I was 25. As I grew up, my interest in the culture I was from also grew. Over the years I reconnected with uncles, cousins, and even my sister (named Victoria).

“The one truism about heritage is that you can never completely lose your connection with it. It’s the great connector. It’s dynamic and fluid. Even among Latino culture, the tapestry of experiences is vast and undefined. I love and embrace the complexity of my heritage, the people who paved the way for me, and the role my cultures (all of them) play in my life.”

Today, we continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month by bringing the backgrounds of our WALO team into the spotlight. Next up is Billing Coordinator/Project Manager Ingrid Bobadilla.

“This story begins in Bogotá, Colombia in 2007: the place where we were born. This is more than a story about immigration. This is a story of endurance, learning, strength, and love. A story of the moments in which we felt we were going to break down and couldn’t handle so many emotions at once.”

“The plan was that once Gio (my husband) was in the United States, he could begin the immigration process for his small family and get a little closer to reaching our goals. We knew what we were up against, but it was so difficult to endure and it simply didn’t seem to make any sense. We could only ask ourselves, ‘Why do we have to be apart? We could be together if we took a step back, but that would also mean abandoning what always seemed to be a better tomorrow.’”

“In 2014, and after seven years of waiting, our family (Mateo, Ingrid, and Gio) could finally be together. We could finally begin a process of mutual and personal growth, a process of learning a new culture where things are vastly different from our country of origin. We began a life together as a family to build new adventures, memories, and moments in a new country and a new city. And now, after six years, we are Mateo, Ingrid, Gio, and Salomón.”

We are excited to introduce our newest Senior Account Supervisor, Jessica Tade! As a Montana native and piano player at heart, Jessica brings a fearless attitude and her sharp intuition to the table. After getting her advertising chops in Los Angeles, she has since found her home in Dallas where she spends her time searching for new restaurants, thrifting for vintage furniture, and enjoying as much live music as possible. Welcome to the WALO family, Jess!

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to celebrate Hispanic culture and influence by recognizing the backgrounds of our WALO team and how their roots shaped them into who they are today. Our first spotlight will be on our Associate Creative Director - Paco Garabito.

“I first traveled to the United States in 1981, at the age of 4. I was excited and amazed because my family and I were visiting Disneyland, but first we had to make a stop in Houston (bottom left). Who’d have thought that 20 years later, I would not only be living in the US, but in the first state I landed in? My great-grandfather (left), was originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, and my grandfather emigrated from there to pursue his law degree and build a political career (That’s him on the shirt). My parents (center) lived in Mexico City all their lives. I currently have two passports, one for Mexico and one for the United States. This journey has led to some great experiences, but none more amazing than my beautiful daughter (top), who was born here in the US. Part of my legacy is to ensure that I promote in her those customs and traditions that characterize us, so that she can grow up celebrating our Hispanic culture.”

Ricky’s Talent Showcase

We love showcasing the individuality and creativity of the WALO Fam, and so we recently asked Ricky to create something for our social feeds that highlights who he is as a designer and a human being! This is what he had to say:

“The reason I love animation is because to me it feels like the last frontier of design. Motion design is a whole other world where there are endless possibilities of what you can do, express, and show. By the end of the animation process, I feel like Frankenstein making one of his creations come to life. It’s a really cool thing to experience as a creator. Speaking of animation babies, this piece was inspired by my life in 2020 when I not only had to focus on work itself but had to take care of the 3 kids I have at home. As a father of 3 kids under 3 years old, you literally have to have 6 arms to get through the day.”

Kobe Bryant Remembrance Day

Today we want to honor the memory of someone who truly exemplified what it means to live with Guts, Soul and Play ¬– Kobe Bryant. Throughout his hall of fame career, Kobe not only put up incredible numbers on the court, off the court, he also touched countless lives and inspired people to chase their dreams. Our hearts and minds are with Vanessa Bryant and the rest of his family and friends today as we all continue to remember the impact he had on the world.

The Cycle of Minority Underrepresentation in Advertising

In order to eliminate systemic racism within the advertising industry, we must first acknowledge its existence and that it’s not going away on its own. It is only by educating ourselves and others of the vicious cycle of underrepresentation that we can hope to solve it.

With a vote, we’re able to shape the very fabric of our country and determine what the future holds, not just for ourselves, but for generations to come. It’s imperative that every voice from every background in this country be heard.

4th of July

This country was founded on a dream that all members of our society should share in democracy, rights, liberty, opportunity, and equality. The Blessings of Liberty are just as imperative now as they were when our founding fathers declared independence. This Independence Day, amid the festivities, fireworks and celebrations of freedom, we want to take time to truly reflect on what comes next, and what we as individuals and as a whole need to do to further our fight for true freedom and equality for all.

#LoveWins

In addition to being a reminder of the strength and bravery of the LGBTQIA community during the Stonewall Uprising of 1969, Pride Month is also a yearly celebration of acceptance, individualism and most of all, love. On this day 5 years ago, the United States Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in all 50 states and just earlier this month, LGBTQIA employees were finally granted legal protection against discrimination in the workplace. As a country, we still have much work to do in the fight towards equality for ALL regardless of their race, gender, sexuality or creed, but Pride Month serves as a beautiful reminder that above all else, #LoveWins. Happy Pride Month, everyone.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, over two years AFTER Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, Union General Granger arrived in Galveston, TX to inform Texans that the Civil War had ended and that all those enslaved were now free. To celebrate this day, and to take our stand in the fight for equality that still alludes our country, WALO has decided to make Juneteenth a company day of observance, learning, unlearning and direct action. Please keep an eye out for our stories, where we will be sharing information and resources, as well as what efforts the team is taking to educate themselves and inspire action.

This #TBT we’re looking back to our first official WALO client, Bonton Farms. From the minute we met them, we truly believed in the work they were doing, so we partnered with them to help build their brand. At a time when community support in Dallas is more crucial than ever, we want to once again shine a light on Bonton Farms. Not only do they provide accessible fresh food to a neighborhood that was once considered a food desert, but they work to help restore the lives of those around them through health mentorships, jobs and much more. Show your support today by making your next grocery haul through BontonFarms.org, placing a to-go order at their café or donating to help them grow hope through agriculture.

As a country and as individuals, we all have so much to learn and unlearn about the systems of oppression within our society. We’ve compiled a collection of organizations, activists and leaders that are working to educate the public on the injustices that members of our communities are faced with daily. We urge all of our followers, friends and family to join us on this mission to become more knowledgeable and responsible allies. This is the essential first step in the process of fighting for true equality.

Nothing like a little friendly competition to start off hump day! A couple of weeks ago, the WALO creative team challenged our accounts team to a logo design contest to show them what being a designer is all about. The client was tough, the brief was minimal and the timeline non-existent, but our account managers pulled it off! Check it out and see who you think had the best logo. We might have some new hybrid creatives, huh?

Nothing is more important than the well-being of our fellow humans. That is why we have decided to keep our physical office closed and continue to work remotely until data tells us it is safe to return. While we are looking forward to getting back to the office and seeing everyone’s smiling faces again, WALO has been forward-thinking since its inception, which fortunately allows us to continue performing at our best while socially distanced. We care about you and yours and hope to see you soon. Until then, please continue to reach us via phone, email and video conferencing.
