Today is Small Business Saturday! 🛍️ 🍾 💕 🏬

You might not realize it, but every time you pick up a cup of coffee from your favorite neighborhood café or buy a gift from a local artist's online store, you're shopping small and making a difference.

In fact, 62% of U.S. small businesses reported that they need to see consumer spending return to pre-COVID levels by the end of 2020 in order to stay in business. When you Shop Small® this holiday season – and all year long – you can help create a big impact.

Shop Small. Shop Local. Shop Small Business.

Tomorrow, November 28 is Small Business Saturday! 🥂 🎈 🍾 🎉 🥳

Small Business Saturday is a great way to support small business owners in your local town or neighborhood. When you shop small, you directly support local economies and promotes vibrant, diverse communities. There are other practical reasons to shop locally every day, not just on Small Business Saturday:

1️⃣ Small businesses give back to the community
When you spend money in your neighborhood, your sales tax stays in your neighborhood. You help fund public education, parks, and street improvements, firefighters, and so on.

2️⃣ Local store owners create local jobs
The Small Business Administration reports that local businesses added 8 million jobs to the American economy since 1990.

3️⃣ Local owners buy local services
Independent local businesses go into their local community to buy the supporting services they need, including architects, designers, cabinet shops, sign makers and contractors, accountants, lawyers, and so on.

4️⃣ Local establishments provide great customer service
Business owners rely on great customer service to build a loyal customer base.

5️⃣ Small businesses create a sense of community
It is great to see that poster of local events and clubs in the window.

6️⃣ It feels good to help neighbors and friends succeed
We bet you know someone who owns a small business.

7️⃣ It is about preserving the community
The American Independent Business Alliance says: “The disappearance of local businesses leaves a social and economic void that is palpable and real — even when it goes unmeasured,” AIBA says. “A community’s quality of life changes in ways that macroeconomics is slow to measure, or ignores completely.”

We hope you will shop locally year-round, as well as on Small Business Saturday. After all, small businesses are what built America, one neighborhood at a time.

‘Norfolk Innovation Corridor’ launches with goal to make the area known as ‘the most resilient community in America’.

This is part of a broader effort to diversify the city’s economy beyond its reliance on the military’s presence, a goal discussed regionwide for years, especially as federal budget sequestration delayed the region’s recovery after the Great Recession of the late 2000s.

Virginia 30 Day Fund looks to help 1,000 small businesses by end of year

The Virginia 30 Day Fund launched back in April and is on its way to connecting 1,000 businesses with some extra cash.

“Anything from bakeries to barber shops, dog walkers to diners. We’ve even funded a private investigation firm, we’ve seen all walks of life,” says co-founder Pete Snyder.

The process is simple, and it starts at VA30DayFund.com. In order to qualify, businesses must have between three and 30 employees, have been in operation for at least a year, and be owned and operated by a Virginia resident. The money comes as forgivable loans.

“We were supposed to be around five or six weeks, hence the name ’30 Day Fund’. But we are in our 7th round of overtime right now, months into this horrible pandemic, and people are still hurting. So as long as people are hurting, we’re going to stick around,” Snyder adds.
