Loudoun Small Business Week Events Begin Monday

Loudoun Small Business Week, May 11-17, will offer nearly two dozen events where entrepreneurs can network with industry leaders and learn essential strategies for business growth, the county’s Economic Development Department announced this week.

“Talk to almost anyone who started a small company and made it big, and the two things that took them from idea to IPO are the personal connections they made, and the information they put to use,” Loudoun Economic Development Director Buddy Rizer said in a prepared statement.

The business community will get to do both during this year’s Small Business Week 2015, according to Rizer’s department.

The week kicks off with a special presentation by international medical device company K2M CEO Eric Major on May 11, and it ends with farm and winery tours May 16 and 17. Other highlights include a screening of the documentary “Startupland” and a Tap Takeover by Loudoun craft brewers; both will be held at the Alamo Drafthouse in Ashburn on May 12.

For the kick-off event, the Loudoun County Small Business Development Center will put the spotlight on the success of Leesburg’s K2M Inc. during a special seminar to kick off Small Business Week. The program—titled “Garage To Global To IPO—And Beyond: K2M, Inc. Keeps Scaling New Heights”—will feature a presentation by Eric Major, K2M president, CEO and co-founder, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, May 11 at the George Washington University Virginia Science and Technology Campus, 20101 Academic Way in Ashburn. There will be a networking period with refreshments from 5 to 6 p.m. K2M is a global producer of medical devices. Major will share philosophies he has formed on entrepreneurship and competition, building a corporate culture of success, and leveraging innovation. The seminar fee is $10 for online registration at LoudounSBDC.eventbrite.com or $15 at the door.

See the full schedule of events here.

“More than 80 percent of all Loudoun businesses have less than 20 employees,” Rizer said. “We’ve worked hard to build an entrepreneurial ecosystem in Loudoun that helps companies start and thrive.”

That ecosystem includes Loudoun Small Business Week cosponsors CIT, the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce, the Mason Enterprise Center - Leesburg, the Northern Virginia Technology Council, the Small Business Development Center, and the Town of Leesburg.

Each member of the Board of Supervisors also will visit small businesses in his or her district during the event.

“It’s very important to me and other board members to personally show our support to people who run companies that power this county’s economic engine,” county Chairman Scott K. York (R-At Large) said in a statement.

The Economic Development Department asks those attending Loudoun Small Business Week events or activities to tweet about their experiences using the hashtag #LoudounSBW. Organizers will monitor Twitter and select participants to be featured on the economic development blog.

“I have found no greater satisfaction than achieving success through honest dealing and strict adherence to the view that, for you to gain, those you deal with should gain as well” Alan Greenspan

Adapt - Most people do not like change as they do not know what the change might bring about. In business the ability to adapt is crucial. Herewith the quote from businessman Charles Darwin: “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.”

“Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve. Thoughts are things! And powerful things at that, when mixed with definiteness of purpose, and burning desire, can be translated into riches” – Napoleon Hill

3 Steps to a Breakthrough (from "Entrepreneur")
Start your day with tips and insight from our experts.
Tony Robbins says he “lives for breakthroughs.” Whether you want to engage in healthier relationships, shed some pounds or build a successful business, we all have the power to boost our chances at success in every aspect of life. Robbins says breakthroughs share three steps, all equally important:
1. Change your strategy. The best mindset can’t overcome a bad plan. “Running east looking for a sunset, I don’t care how positive you are, I don’t care how hard you work at it, it’s not going to work, it’s the wrong strategy,” says Robbins. He suggests you find people who’ve achieved turnarounds and transformations and study what went right.
2. Change your story. Common excuses like “I’m just not good at relationships,” or “Only those born rich get richer” are stories we tell ourselves that keep us from implementing our goals. Robbins says we must divorce ourselves from stories that limit us in order to unlock true potential.
3. Change your state. If you’re constantly stressed, overwhelmed or frustrated, you won’t have the fuel to implement your goals. Instead, you’ll develop a dis empowering story, telling yourself that nothing can change and that nothing works. Find a way to recharge. Your mental and emotional state determines your perception on life, and is essential to any breakthrough.

Couples who have lived together a long time have their own way of communicating.
A woman overheard her aunt and uncle one day: "What are you looking for in that closet?" the aunt asked.
"Nothing," answered the uncle.
"Well, it's not in there. Look under the bed."

Spring Cleaning: 5 Tips for Organizing Your Office
Whether you're working at the kitchen table in your home, or you're logging your work hours in a cubicle, staying organized can be a big challenge. The aesthetics of a messy, cluttered desk aren't ideal for any office environment, but the real issue is the unnecessary time and energy you have to spend looking for important documents or handy office tools - and how that wasted time can affect your productivity. Here are a few tips to keep your workspace organized.

Get Rid of Old Papers
Chances are many of those papers piled high on your desk aren't of any value to you. As you begin to sort through your stack of papers, begin asking yourself: Do I need this? Why? Where will I look for it when I need it? Then, create a filing system that best fits your needs, and make a point to file future printouts as they are created to keep the problem from reoccurring. Remember to think before you print. Ask yourself: Do I really need to print that file, or can it survive in binary code?

Separate Business and Pleasure
Regardless of where you do the bulk of your work, it's important to keep distractions at bay. Keep a home office free of distraction by having a designated mail location away from your office space, and encouraging family members to keep the area free of toys, tech gadgets, and anything else that might invite lost time and inefficiency to sneak into your day. For office employees, cell phones and smart phones can be a big productivity-killer. Keep your phone in a designated location, and check it during breaks - instead of every time you hear the text message chime.

Keep Supplies and Often-Used Items Separate
Daily-use items that you'll likely need throughout the course of a day, like your laptop, pens, planner, and Post-It Notes, all deserve a spot on your desk. Other items, such as tape, stapler, paper clips, and envelopes, should be neatly stored inside your desk. This keeps less-frequently-used items from taking up valuable desk real estate, but ensures that they are easily accessible.

Organize Your Computer
When your favorite desktop background starts getting obscured with icons, it's time to de-clutter your virtual desktop. File away documents that you'll need again, and send everything else off to the virtual recycle bin. Not only will you have a much more attractive looking desktop screen, but you will save countless hours searching for your important documents.

Slow Down
One of the biggest pitfalls to organization is finding the time. Invest the time to properly organize your space, so files, supplies, and other items are in an intuitive, easy-to-find place. Once you've established a system that works for you, stick to it! Spending a few seconds to return items to a designated spot will help you save lots of time in the long run.
