COVID-19 meets 12 steps as NYers in recovery gather for Central Park session of ‘Sober Active’ workouts

It can take more than 12 steps to stay sober in the midst of a pandemic. Recovering alcoholics, addicts or even smokers can instead walk into Central Park, where the Sober Active program meets once a week to help members stay on the right path as the city remains in the grip of COVID-19 https://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/ny-covid-9-sober-active-20200913-o4xnoluxdrebdjxd4blkle7smm-story.html

The sessions offer a safe haven after COVID-19 forced most local 12-step meetings to move from in-person to online. The workouts begin promptly at 6 p.m., with a meeting afterward.

Opinions & observations: Rejection of curriculum requirements undermines NYC children's education

In Brooklyn Eagle, Andrea Kopel calls on fellow private school parents and leaders to support education reform aimed to improve education at ultra-Orthodox yeshivas.

"So I say to New York City’s elite independent schools: I know you’re uncomfortable with this; it’s understandable. But it’s time to hold ourselves to a higher standard of citizenship in this city we love. It’s time to live our ideals of educational excellence for all children — not just our own."

https://brooklyneagle.com/articles/2020/09/10/opinions-observations-rejection-of-curriculum-requirements-undermines-nyc-students-education/

When I made the choice 15 years ago to opt out of New York City’s public school system and send my daughter to what most would call an “elite” private school, I knew I wasn’t part of the solution to the problem of educational inequity in our city. But I never imagined that her school, …

With the coronavirus menacing our city, voting has become a lot harder and a lot less predictable. In June, our state primary was a scramble with 775,000 absentee ballots sent to voters in New York City and 400,000 returned to a Board of Elections overwhelmed by the numbers.
