Happy Monday - Thank You Manhattan Digest for the shout out for E's, our favorite bar (and one of our favorite interiors projects), and also named 'The Absolute Best Bar on the UWS' by Grubstreet. ⁠⠀

"The Upper West Side continues to be a place that this writer happens to love, especially when it comes to the restaurants that inhabit its area. e’s BAR, located blocks from the 1 train stop at 86th Street, is a space that expertly mixes great rock n’ roll vibes with fabulous bites and so much more. ... It’s a spot that I first checked out back in 2017 and was massively impressed by as its insides were filled with amazing portraits of music legends like Debbie Harry and Cyndi Lauper amid a design that was colorful and fun to witness. ... It’s still amazing to look at although the only chance you’ll be able to see how wonderfully decorated e’s BAR is nowadays is when you (safely) use the bathroom as indoor dining remains closed in New York City..."⁠⠀

Recalling the Manifest Destiny Billboard Project MMD helped realize for LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division) in support of 10 artists' full-size billboards spanning the 10 freeway, from Florida to California - 100 individual billboards in total. Seen by millions of travelers from the Fall of '13 - Spring of '15, this inventive program, conceived by artist Zoe Crosher and co-curated by Shamim M. Momin was an opportunity to bring art to the masses:⁠⠀

"...Using the concept of Manifest Destiny – America’s territorial expansion across North America – the artists explored this problematic and layered history. Crosher writes, “The intention was to give a physicalized reminder of this extraordinarily influential (and often times destructive) 19th century belief which unabashedly dictated the expansion west, that still dictates our movement west, and to gently place/implicate/remind the people unknowingly participating in that landscape along the way.” Momin adds, “By physically moving through and mapping the very landscape that has been so fantasized, dreamed about, and capitalized upon in a breadth of positive and negative ways, the artists had the opportunity to address their work to the idea in a variety of ways – opaque or direct, tangential or political, macro and micro.”⁠⠀

Timewarp to the Snoopy and Belle in Fashion Show at Bryant Park, 1997. Matt designed a look interpreting Linus, the Peanuts character, which included a custom Multibag with a 'Linus blanket strap', in supple blue Italian lambskin, with a printed silver metallic T-shirt echoing Linus' banded shirt. 24 designers & celebs showed looks including Jeremy Scott, Whoopi Goldberg, Heatherette, Betsey Johnson, Cannon, Jason Wu, Isaac Mizrahi, and others, all benefitting Dress for Success, sponsored by MetLife. 😍⁠⠀

Peanuts launched in 1950 as the famous cartoon strip, and although he appeared in the strip in the 50's, we celebrate his birthday as today because that's when he walked into a surprise birthday party in 1968 (second image). RIP Kansai Yamamoto. Iconic in most memories as the creator of David Bowie's iconic looks for Ziggy Stardust. His sportswear helped define the graphic style of the 70's and 80's, and is highly collectable today, along with many designs for eyewear, tableware and more. You'll notice his graphic influence in recent Gucci collections. In the early 90's he would evolve into an event producer with events called 'Super Shows'.⁠⠀

"In the early Nineties, after two decades of showing and selling his avant-garde collections in London, Paris and New York, Yamamoto took a hiatus from the fashion world to focus on live entertainment events. His Super Shows, as he called them, combined elements of music, dance, acrobatics, traditional Japanese festivals and other spectacles, and were performed around the world, from Vietnam and India to Russia and Japan. Sketching for me is an invaluable way to visualize a space, product, logo, packaging concept or whatever we're working on. A sketch can happen on the mythical napkin, on a wall, or here - on the back of a found piece of paper. From the sketch, we'll evolve the concept into plans, CADs, material boards, etc. This is a new space in construction now in NYC (can't wait to share with everyone soon).⁠

We're loving the Covid-safer outdoor dining areas that NYC restaurants are setting up. The city feels - dare we say - almost joyous and certainly festive. Acrylic panels between tables, planted barriers, overhead shelters and more are peppering the streets. The Coronapocalypse has forced us all to rethink our every day behavior and businesses. One of the upsides is watching retailers pivot to provide for their customers under the new guidelines for Covid responsibility. Creativity abounds in NYC in restaurants, limited retail, salons, and other businesses. I was walking Madison and came across the Ralph's Coffee set up at Ralp's store at 888 Madison at 72nd and it looks and functions so nicely!
