Guess who surpassed Dr. Seuss in the last decade?

It's James Patterson!

From 2010 to 2019, James Patterson sold 84 million units across print and e-book formats, making him the past decade’s bestselling author at outlets that report to NPD BookScan. Patterson’s sales total was double that of Dr. Seuss, and more than those of Stephen King, David Baldacci, and John Grisham combined, BookScan said. It also found that the prolific Patterson was the only author to have sold more than one million units in each of the adult, YA, and juvenile categories over the past 10 years. And in a final numerical nugget, it reported that one in seven books sold in the suspense/thriller category in the past decade were written by Patterson.

BookScan also cited Patterson's donation of millions of books to schoolchildren and the military, and the more than $70 million he’s donated to support education and encourage reading.

Code Name: William Tell is an adventure story that starts with an idea by the president of the United States, from which a hero emerges. A story of goods triumph over evil, as told by a famous historian who himself is a retired army lieutenant colonel. The story traces the life of our hero from boyhood to manhood and then to a leader of men fighting a secret cold war. Our villain is known to the free worlds intelligence community only by the code name KRAIT, a deadly viper.

One day, near the end of an unsuccessful term, a president in the solitude of the Oval Office found time to think of some way to make amends for his failures. He gave his imagination free rein. Soon an idea began to grow into a solution to a serious problem: a solution which would become the closest-held secret since the atomic bomb. From this secret would come a remarkable man, code name William Tell.

We need books that center Black joy

With the dominance of Anti-Blackness, it is especially important for Black children to know that they are precious and brilliant. And what's the most powerful way to affirm Blackness and Black identities? It is through READING.

Dr. Sonja Cherry-Paul is an author, consultant, and Director of Diversity and Equity at Teachers College Reading and Writing Project and the co-founder and co-facilitator of the Institute for Racial Equity in Literacy suggest the following elements in selecting books that center Black joy to help you and your child experience a celebration of Blackness as you read together.

- Characters — Look for books that present Black characters in a variety of ways so that Black children can imagine their past, present, and future.

- Family Structures — Look for books that are inclusive of many families.

- Communities — Select books that represent communities positively; that show the richness of communities, their strength and resilience.

- Racial/Cultural Identities — Look for books where Black identities and cultures are presented powerfully and authentically.

See more here:

It’s important that Black children feel seen, valued, and loved in their reading lives.

Beyond Marketing

Marketing is always seen by the majority as purely advertising, a tool to lure us into buying.

But it isn't.

For us, it tells stories, brings together communities, and creates emotions.

A GREAT DAY FOR THE UNDERREPRESENTED

Here in Author's Note 360, we are from the underrepresented (where majority of our employees are colored) who relentlessly campaign for diversity in the publishing industry.

The 200-year old eminent society, Royal Society of Literature, took a big leap for diversity—the group added pens of Andrea Levy and Jean Rhys to its collection

The eminent society, which was founded in 1820, periodically appoints new fellows deemed to have published works of “outstanding literary merit”. Fellows are then invited to sign their names in the society’s roll book, using the pen of a “historically influential” UK writer – either Charles Dickens (although his pen was retired in 2013), TS Eliot, Byron or George Eliot. Now, as the RSL sets out to champion the writers of colour with a series of new appointments and initiatives, it has added Levy to this list, alongside Wide Sargasso Sea author Jean Rhys.

The RSL is also launching two new initiatives to improve diversity among its ranks. The organisation has about 600 fellows, and is planning to elect an unprecedented 60 new fellows over the next two years, through a panel chaired by Booker winner Bernardine Evaristo.

How to cast a good mix of characters in your story?

Pixar Storytelling Rule #7: Casting Characters

Believable Characters

A good story is a complex mechanism where every part of it is necessary. Nothing is missing and should be missing. And this is especially true for the characters.

Obviously, you have the hero but every other characters are either illuminated aspect of the character, the values at risk or simply the obstacle.

So, how do you cast the mix of your characters that they complement each other?

Let's learn now in this #video.

AND LET THE BATTLE BEGIN...

Penguin Random House's acquisition of Simon & Schuster is not on its final stages yet but it has stirred the entire industry especially for News Corp’s CEO Robert Thomson who sees antitrust issues in PRH buy of S&S.

“It will clearly be a serious antitrust issue if Bertelsmann acquires Simon & Schuster. However cute and clever the structure, if Bertelsmann is their beneficiary, it will be a book behemoth. And this will certainly be a profound antitrust issue for the entire book industry and, no doubt, for authors around the world.” Thomson stressed.

However, Bertelsmann CEO Thomas Rabe thinks otherwise as he told the Financial Times, “We looked at this and we don’t think it is an issue. “If you look at the market holistically, particularly the strength of Amazon, and it includes self-publishing and the like, we don’t think this will be an obstacle.”

Is this an issue on who should own who? Or is this solely about the profitability bottomline?

HarperCollins, a News Corp subsidiary, has put up a close distance in U.S. sales in the American book market with an estimated $1.1 billion second to PRH with $2.2 billion. A purchase of S&S, which has revenue of $814 million, would mean considerably closing the gap.

Who do you think is at the mercy of these giants now?

How to Create Believable Characters?

Pixar Storytelling Rule #6: Believable Characters

Passionate readers are truth-effectors. They can smell phony sentiments a mile away.

Yes, you may have the most original character but if the readers don't buy the emotional truth, certainly, you'll lose them.

So, how do you make them sincerely show the emotional truth?

Let's look at how Pixar does this.

ON THE SPOTLIGHT: Reading and Literacy

ENRICHMENT—this is what reading do to our lives. We are not only nourished by huge amounts of information and knowledge, but we get entertained.

When we read, not only are we improving our working memory, but research has shown that it makes us feel better and more positive too including help with depression, cutting stress, and reducing the chances of developing Alzheimer’s later in life.

But to most #booklovers, armed with a good story, reading lets you escape where your imagination can lift you away.

So which country reads the most? It's INDIA. They read almost 11 hours in average. In the statistics, it's the asians who read a lot, with 4 asian nations on the top 4 of the ranking.

Reading and retaining the knowledge to be shared is a form of literate behavior. The World’s Most Literate Nations (WMLN) rankings strongly suggest and World Literacy demonstrates is that these kinds of literate behaviors are critical to the success of individuals and nations in the knowledge-based economies that define our global future.

A PIECE OF THOUGHT FROM THE VENERABLE

Known "for his powerful and artistically unique contribution to the modern American novel," the Nobel Prize in Literature Recipient (1949) author William Faulkner, once said:

“Read, read, read. Read everything - trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read!”

TODAY IN LITERATURE

Mcnally: In Touching the Stoniest of Hearts

"Theatre has the power to change people when all the elements—script, performance, design—are aligned in perfect harmony to reach across the stage and lift the audience en masse to a new level of awareness and collective emotional resonance. " For him, there is more to being a playwright, screenwriter, and a librettist, there's more to theatre...

In the theatre and arts realm, Mcnally, of the several outstanding contemporary male dramatists, is considered the most prolific and multifaceted especially when it comes to his works on homosexuality. He never feared to show that experience in a society blighted by prejudice.

Audacious, master of the high-wire act as they say. Mcnally is certainly ahead of his time. "His vision celebrates the bravery of lonely souls; his voice resounds with the anguish and joy of life itself. Out of the mundane, he shapes the opera of the human heart.," American actress, Swoosie Kurtz, praises.

The hallmarks of McNally’s writing are his sharp wit, his complex characters, and stories that touch the core of the human experience.

He was responsible for over 80 plays, musicals, and opera librettos over the past 50 years. In 2018 McNally was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The honor of election is considered the highest form of recognition of artistic merit in the United States.

As for us, apart from his plays, we cannot "un-remember," nor pretermit his moving last words during his acceptance speech of the 2019 Tony Awards:

"Your diversity is long overdue and welcome...The only dues are your heart, your soul, your mind, your guts—all of you. Your commitment to this ancient art form assures me that what we do matters. The world needs artists more than ever to remind us what kindness, truth, and beauty are.

“O brave new world,/That has such people in it!” Shakespeare’s talking to all of us. No one does it alone. Least of all playwrights."

Staring impassively at the sky in the dead of night, with a visiting wandering aforethought on how it would have been; what it could have been if I publish my work. We all have been there. Fear outlasts us.
