Inaugural William Lynch Jr. Democratic Club Gala

We are excited to announce The Manhattan West Democratic Club will be renamed the William "Bill" Lynch Jr. Democratic Club at the club's annual gala, Friday, May 5th at Riverside Church in Harlem. Join us for an elegant evening as we honor Bill Lynch Jr.'s legacy and celebrate Harlem's future.

Bill Lynch not only believed in politics, he believed in good politics. He was known as a coalition builder. He had a strategic mind and was adept at spotting a leader and taking the necessary steps to get them in the right position to impact positive change in our communities.

So when the idea of renaming the Manhattan West Democratic Club after him presented itself, we were all ecstatic about the opportunity. What better way to carry on such a strong legacy than to continue it in a Democratic Club dedicated to community involvement and improvement?

So it is with great esteem that we ask you to join us and sponsor a table for this special occasion where we will celebrate his legacy and honor the careers of the Honorable Congressman Charles B. Rangel Dr. Hazel Dukes and Rev. Dr. James Alexander Forbes Jr.

Norman McConney Jr., champion for minority students, dies at 68

Our condolences to the family of former BLA team member Norman McConney, Jr., who passed away last week.

In an era when the leaders of both the Assembly and Senate Democrats are black, it’s hard to remember what Norman McConney Jr. found when he arrived at the Capitol in the mid-1970s as a young black aide to Buffalo Assemblyman Arthur Eve, the most influential of what was then a small number of minori…

A Well-Deserved Honor for Mayor David Dinkins

"David Dinkins represents a time when public service was considered a calling. From his service in the U.S. Marines, to his time in the New York State legislature, his service as New York City Clerk, Borough President, Mayor and now Professor; he has always looked for ways to make a contribution to the public good. It is wonderful that future generations of city officials will work in a building that will carry his name."

A Well-Deserved Honor for Mayor David Dinkins admin October 5, 2015 New York News I admit that I am biased, since he has been my colleague on Columbia’s faculty for over two decades, but David Dinkins is one of the most underrated public servants in American history. His record as mayor of New York…

Bump After Bump, Bill de Blasio Is Still Hitting Political Potholes

As the interview drew to a close, Mr. de Blasio invoked a saying of a former mentor, Bill Lynch, the famed political adviser to former Mayor David N. Dinkins.

Many allies are wondering how Mr. de Blasio, a seasoned political operative, allowed problems to add up in his second year in office.

What America Must Do After Charleston Massacre | Black Star News

Our friend and South Carolina native Marian Wright Edelman discusses what we must do in the wake of the Charleston massacre.

This is from Thomas Jefferson's "Notes on the State of Virginia": "For in a warm climate, no man will labour for himself who can make another labour for him. This is so true, that of the proprietors of slaves a very small proportion indeed are ever seen to labor. And can the liberties of a nation be…

Black Women in the Fight Against Police Brutality

Following Marilyn Mosby's courageous decision to charge the six officers for pummeling Freddie Gray's spine, Billy gives a brief overview of all the women before her who worked to fight police brutality. (It took a whole lot of research on his part.)

Mosby's courageous decision to prosecute makes her just one of the many black women over the decades who have worked hard to quell the scourge of police brutality. Black women have played a substantial role in bringing national and international attention to the issue, both in the past and today.

With President Obama set to launch his "My Brother's Keeper" program today, here's a look back at Bill III's discussion of it last year.

Why We Need Independent Prosecutors

In his latest column, Bill Lynch III talks about the need for independent prosecutors in police brutality cases. He cites the conflict of interest Dan Donovan had given his cozy relationship with the police unions while overseeing the Eric Garner grand jury.

Clearly the South Carolina Supreme Court did the right thing by assigning a special prosecutor to the Walter Scott case. And if South Carolina can do it, then the rest of the nation can do the same....

It's Camera Time

Given that video footage was so important in getting the facts straight in the South Carolina murder of an unarmed black man, this is a good time to remind folks of Bill Lynch III's column this past December about the need for police body cameras.

Already, the evidence is pouring in that police body cameras are helpful for police and civilians. When police officers are accountable to a video camera monitoring them, it appears to make a big change in their behavior....

Workers Save Lives

In his latest column, Bill Lynch III defends labor unions after some particularly harsh anti-worker vitriol and scapegoating in recent months. In the process he unearths the evidence that TWU Local 100 workers are being specifically targeted under the city's new Vision Zero law.

Labor unions, particularly those for public sector workers, have become such a popular punching bag that their membership might as well wear Everlast tags....
