Pilot Projects Design Collective

Pilot Projects Design Collective Pilot Projects is a design company that creates sustainable solutions to compound urban problems. Pilot Projects Design Collective was founded on the belief that small things, well designed, can catalyze big changes.

We design physical spaces, environments, services and products — but at the same time apply our design thinking to the symbols, values, knowledge and behaviors that are often even more impactful. We believe good design addresses both infrastructure and culture to really work. We view each of our projects as a catalyst for long-lasting change, so social, environmental and financial impacts are priorities in our design process and selection of clients. Our collaborative method encourages all stakeholders to explore creative solutions that conserve natural resources and foster human interdependence.

When 500,000 ash trees fall in NYC's forests (and streets), will anybody hear?

We're so excited for Wood at Work 2016 this Oct 28th. Wood-Mizer Portable Sawmills will be cutting up a reclaimed ash tree into usable lumber; demonstrating the potential of this amazing material!

With the rapid advancement of the emerald ash borer beetle, it is projected that the majority of the ash trees in the American Northeast will fall within the decade. New York City, like many other

Our Sarah Wilson on the second meeting of PARTNERS Reforestation Network—founded by woodatwork.nyc's Robin Chazdon. http://goo.gl/UJ81sn

By Sarah Wilson I’ve been fascinated with tropical forests since I learned they existed. To a five-year old growing up on the flat, windy prairies of Canada, they were the perfect thing – lush, warm, mysterious, and full of danger, excitement, and adventure. The possibilities for discovery seemed en…

Delegates at Climate Talks Focus on Saving the World’s Forests

Forests have been a hot topic at COP21, as this NYT article attests: http://goo.gl/wa3uHz. Conservation is great, but cities still need to cut carbon emissions at home. Here's a project that does both: BrooklynBridgeForest.com.

If a deal is reached, nations — particularly tropical countries — will have agreed to sharp reductions in deforestation, and in some cases to ending it.

We don’t trust drinking fountains anymore, and that’s bad for our health

The Washington Post just featured our "Respect the Fountain" event! Part of our "100 Fountains" competition for international artists and designers to publicly exhibit their creative drinking fountain concepts. Very happy for this shout-out on another thirst-promoting NYC summer day.

One sultry day in 2012, a handful of New Yorkers laid out a rich red carpet in Union Square Park. As a jazz band grooved in the background, vested and begloved hosts led guests to the star attraction:...

Our founder Scott Francisco in Nepal: He is SAFE and is helping out with the disaster relief effort...

Dear Friends of Pilot-Projects,

As you may or may not know Scott flew to Nepal last Thursday. We wanted to reassure you all that we have heard from Scott and Sarah and that they are safe and well. They were in a bus at the time and pulled over to the side of the road in the countryside. It is a heartbreaking tragedy to hear of the earthquake in Nepal. Scott may be staying in Kathmandu to help with earthquake impacts.

There is power loss, and very little phone service, hence a drop off in communication. When we heard from Scott yesterday he wrote... "thousands of buildings devastated. will see what we can do to help. using borrowed laptop of family displaced... camped out side of buildings."

No better person than Scott to contribute to the disaster relief effort at this time of great need in Nepal. Our thoughts and prayers go to those affected by the earthquake.

Over and out,

Camille, and the Pilot Projects Team.
