In Miami Beach, live theater returns — in vacant storefronts

Live theatre returns to South Florida with Miami New Drama's innovative 7 Deadly Sins, performed in vacant storefronts on Lincoln Road. (Since the start of the pandemic, 66 stores have closed on one of the nation's most famous retail streets). Short plays by Hilary Bettis, Nilo Cruz, Moisés Kaufman, Rogelio Martinez, Dael Orlandersmith, Carmen Pelaez and Aurin Squire take on each of the seven deadly sins in the empty storefronts, performed to socially distanced audiences of 10. The theatrical event will bolster the complete cultural and commercial reactivation of Lincoln Road.

Overture ("A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum") — New York Philharmonic

To celebrate Stephen Sondheim's 90th birthday today, here is a fun listen: the Overture to A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, played by the NY Philharmonic, with Alexander Gemignani conducting, in its original Irwin Kostal-Sid Ramin Broadway orchestration (scored for violas, and NOT violins. Notice the violin section sitting this one out). This Overture - jittery, eccentric, unpredictable - would be Broadway's first inkling of what a Sondheim score would sound like, and is a harbinger of the singular career to come. Happy birthday to the great Stephen Sondheim!
