Untermyer Gardens Conservancy: Daffodils for Heros

We are huge fans of Untermyer Gardens Conservancy, a gorgeous reclaimed public garden in #Yonkers. It's closed to visitors right now but Steve Byrns figured out that the fields of daffodils should be enjoyed and donated. They were gathered and given to local healthcare workers, see below. Win, win, win. Love this. #gardens #giveback #publicspirit

While we have all longed for spring, April has not brought the respite we had hoped for. Global tumult continues and our garden is closed, and no one but the...

PriestmanGoode Contemplates More Sustainable In-Flight Services

This is a thought-provoking article, and exhibit in London, on airline passenger waste. There are no obvious, system-wide solutions, but it's the right direction, and the designers are thinking about some interesting and creative interventions.

At a Design Museum exhibition, PriestmanGoode contemplates less wasteful air service, but alternatives like bamboo have their own drawbacks.

Eric J. Smith Renews Tradition in Classical Homes from Coast to Coast

It's been quite an exciting season for my client Eric Smith. First his book was published by Rizzoli International - Renewing Tradition; the Architecture of Eric J. Smith - and now he is the subject of a wonderful profile by Marisa Bartolucci in Introspective magazine, published by 1stdibs. Oh, yes, and then there was the article by @EveKahn in the #NewYorkTimes on November 19. Nice!

For an architect who specializes in crafting family houses meant to endure for generations, Eric J. Smith has never given much thought to his own design legacy. What gratifies him is the work itself — along with the approbation of his clients. Yet his achievements are notable. For much of his care...

Grace Farms Foundation Aims to Combat Modern-Day Slavery in Building Materials Supply Chain

There were a couple of stories in today's newsletters about this important initiative at Grace Farms, CT to call attention to, and to battle, the use of forced labor, or slavery, in the buildings industry. As supply chains become more transparent, it is easier to find out the practices of unethical businesses, which apparently include brick manufacturing, mining and other materials.

The Connecticut-based foundation has convened a group of professionals from architecture, design, engineering, and related fields, to raise awareness about the use of forced labor in the manufacture of building products.

Filtration Skyscrapers could "solve environmental problems"

This is the one of the most exciting things I've seen in a while. It seems like sheer science fiction but my goodness, if this project were feasible, it would push me into full optimism about the oceans and plastic pollution.

Architectural designer and visualiser Honglin Li has proposed deploying floating high-rise waste-to-energy plants fuelled by plastic waste to clean up the oceans while generating electricity.

A lovely article by Andrew Berman on some of the old synagogues still in place, most on the Lower East Side.

As Alan Hess says, when you lose important old buildings, you lose your memories and your cultural touchstones. Let's protect these.

Throughout Greenwich Village, the East Village, and the Lower East Side are several historic synagogues that are often overlooked.

How to grow fresh air

This is the shortest Ted Talk I've ever heard: less than 4 minutes. But it's a simple and super-interesting idea that identifies three plants that clean air and produce large amounts of oxygen. (Ostensibly more than other plants.) Worth listening. #Cleanair #biophilia #airquality

Researcher Kamal Meattle shows how an arrangement of three common houseplants, used in specific spots in a home or office building, can result in measurably cleaner indoor air.

Hudson Yards Is Manhattan’s Biggest, Newest, Slickest Gated Community. Is This the Neighborhood New York Deserves?

We've been saying this for quite a while: Hudson Yards can only serve the rich because of its premise, the expectations of its developers and the math underlying its construction budgets. Sadly it won't even do that very well because, as we've also said, its scale is utterly inhuman; who wants to live or be in a place as devoid of air, light and living things? Congratulations, Michael Kimmelman, for taking it apart and almost, almost pointing out the sick relationship our real estate community has with our elected officials.

Hudson Yards presented the city with a grand opportunity to remake Manhattan’s West Side. But what has arrived? A review of the most ambitious private development in New York in a century.
