DOMAIN OFFICE

DOMAIN OFFICE DOMAIN is a Belgrade & New York City based office operating within the fields of architecture, urbanism, research and academics. www.domainoffice.eu

DOMAIN is an architectural studio based in Belgrade, Serbia and Syracuse, NY, founded by Mitesh Dixit in 2012. DOMAIN deliberately works without a manifesto or agenda, but insists on a method that explores the very nature of a question. We aim to discover ‘new’ questions, as opposed to recycling existing solutions. Our method of investigation transcends scale. We describe this method as ‘unpacking' - exposing the multiple layers, the hard & soft, the physical & critical in order to identify new hierarchies or hidden actors. This process demands an intense investigation into the local, an abject surrender to the existing, and the rejection of any singular ‘vision’.

Landscapes of Extraction:
A visual genealogy on the cultural exchange between Switzerland & Serbia

Employing critical cartography, the installation illustrates the co-dependency of capital, culture, and intellectual production, between the Republic of Serbia and Switzerland. A multi scalar physical map redefines the terrain between the two as a continuous landscape, more precisely, a territory defined via the extraction and exchange of material & immaterial resources.

A series of maps, challenges the Cartesian certainty of traditional mapping, and will illustrate via a method of ‘unpacking’ the hard and soft infrastructure between the “two” countries in order to investigate the material and immaterial contours to enable one to re-conceive and question the very nature of how we ‘see’ and design our built environment.

The ambition of exhibition is to illustrate the need to eliminate the ‘arbitrary’ geopolitical lines that keep a region from operating as it should/does. By identifying shared resources, infrastructure, and cultural similarities, via new methods of representation, the work will visually demonstrate the gradients that exist between nations and how territories perform, thus allowing us to move past our Cartesian understanding of space and begin to discuss alternative political and economic systems that embrace inclusion and diversity.

Thursday, June 13th Архитектонски факултет Скопје / Faculty of Architecture, UKIM in Skopje, MK - final world of the Syracuse Architecture seminar led by Mitesh Dixit.

This Thursday from noon-7 p.m., the Faculty of Architecture at the University Ss. Cyril and Methodius (Архитектонски факултет Скопје / Faculty of Architecture, UKIM) in Skopje, Macedonia will host a public exhibition of the final works from the Syracuse Architecture summer course, led by Mitesh Dixit & Tamara Marović, Between Myth & Utopia: Architecture as Infrastructure.

While visiting five countries, six islands, 15 cities, and 20 seaside resorts, students investigated architecture employed as infrastructure in the former Yugoslavia. Case studies included sea side resorts along the Adriatic Coast, New Belgrade, Serbia, and Tange’s Masterplan in Skopje, Macedonia. Employing forensics, analysis, journalism and physical documentation, students developed a methodology to separate and examine the elements which define the material and immaterial layers of the built environment. The collective work has been organized into a single document, Between Myth & Utopia: Perspective Balkan Atlas.

Assistant Professor Mitesh Dixit will moderate a round table discussion at 1:30 p.m. featuring Syracuse Architecture Associate Dean and Professor Julia Czerniak and Faculty of Architecture Skopje Dean and Professor Ognen Marina.

Rejecting the traditional duality of front & back, i.e. seen and not seen, CCC is positioned to engage and celebrate the immediate context. CCC is inserted within the site at a 35-degree rotation. The angle is driven by function (maintains an existing sewage line), heritage (acknowledges a historical trade route), and context (respects the existing trees). However, by rotating the building, it allows for omni-directional porosity and the deviation from the dogmatic grid of the former campus plan enables it to stand as the desired Icon amongst the existing buildings.

Mitesh Dixit, of DOMAIN Office to deliver the Keynote lecture ‘On Process’ to conclude the 6th Ohrid International Summer school for Architecture and Design. Dixit’s lecture will explore the relationship between theory and practice, the question of what theory is and does, and what constitutes a definition. Through an analysis of two projects, with radically varying architectural typology, density, and location, Dixit will illustrate DOMAIN’s desire to find a ‘new’ definition for practice.

Macro Plaza - Macro Plaza, once the centre of Monterrey, is today nothing more of a reminder of a rich past, which was quickly left behind for the ‘safer’ alternatives. The site’s proximity to cultural and public amenities and its position as the real centre of Monterrey demand this change. The new mix-used tower and downtown masterplanning reconstitutes the site as both the physical and cultural centre of Monterrey…the true heart of the city.
